Repent America - can you get any tackier?

This one's interesting:

Gays 'Responsible' For New Orleans Devastation Group Claims:

An evangelical Christian group that regularly demonstrates at LGBT events is blaming gays for hurricane Katrina.

Repent America says that God "destroyed" New Orleans because of Southern Decadence, the gay festival that was to have taken place in the city over the Labor Day weekend.

"Southern Decadence" has a history of filling the French Quarters section of the city with drunken homosexuals engaging in sex acts in the public streets and bars" Repent America director Michael Marcavage said in a statement Wednesday.

"Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city." Marcavage said. "From ‘Girls Gone Wild’ to ‘Southern Decadence’, New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. May it never be the same."

"Let us pray for those ravaged by this disaster. However, we must not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long," Marcavage said.

"May this act of God cause us all to think about what we tolerate in our city limits, and bring us trembling before the throne of Almighty God," Marcavage concluded.

AMERICAblog has more about it here. He says:

And lest anyone write this off as the musings of fringe nutjobs, this group is hardly Fred Phelps.

This is a group that has been defended by scores of lead religious right organizations in just the past year, including the Southern Baptist Convention, Center for Reclaiming America (attached to D. James Kennedy), the American Family Association's AgapePress, WorldNetDaily, the men over at the Concerned Women for America, Lou Sheldon's Traditional Values Coaltion, the freepers, and more.

Back when Phelps and his group made a big to do about the tsunamis being the fault of sodomites, I was upset. I was offended. I was whatever a progressive, queer young lady should be.

But I think it's important to distance oneself from the crazy. This is a new thought process from me, and I think it's helping my mental health. The above quotations from Repent America show that they've really lost it, and to get upset over their statements would be to give them power. It's disastrous in New Orleans right now, so much so that I don't think any of us really understand exactly how bad it is. And now these idiots in Repent America are taking attention away from the problem at hand.

Fuck 'em. Seriously. Let's ignore the preachers of hatred, and try to help the thousands of people who need it right now.

You can give money to Red Cross, or look through Network for Good to get more information of where to help and how.

I still say that this argument would be more believable if the hurricane had hit NO dead on. If God was involved in this, then he has horrible aim.

Oh....another option for helping is to contact your local Parrotheads in Paradise chapter

main site:
list of chapters:

They are not-for-profit, and they are taking actual needed items, like water, canned food, diapers, toothbrushes/toothpaste, toilet paper, etc.

The people renting the vehicles are doing so out of their own pockets, and are driving it on their own time....everything, every dime and item, will go to the church or school where they drop it off, and these places requested the help.

I'm not a member, but I think I'm gonna join.

I was going to post up the same news, under the title "It's not a disaster of epic proportions if the gays aren't getting blamed for it."

On the other hand, you actually put in intelligent content, so I say, win for you.
