Canada news

Er. Uh oh.

If the polls are correct, Stephen Harper will lead the first Conservative government in more than 12 years.

However, the indications are that it is unlikely he will gain an outright majority and will require alliances.

This second election in 18 months was triggered when Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin lost a confidence vote.

Two TV networks, CTV and Global, predicted a Conservative minority win.

The Conservatives had enjoyed a comfortable lead in opinion polls but some reports suggested the Liberals had fared better than expected.
